Games and Behavior
Posted:9/1/2011 12:00:00 AM

Birds that feel comfortable, secure and healthy will sometimes greet you with an outstretched wing and leg. To reinforce the bond you ave with your bird, perhaps you could mimic his behavior with an outstretched arm and leg. Most parrots develop routine behaviors such as needing a head scratch before getting on your hand....A healthy, well adjusted parrot will grind its beak while trying to fall asleep and sometimes perching on one leg. Sick birds usually skip these behaviors.

Parrots love to play games! An owner who takes the time to play with their bird is a treasure for sure. A curious parrot wants to know where you ae most of the time and will call out to you. Watch your volume when letting him know where you have gone. I'm sre you have noticed that if you decide to take a snooze on the sofa, your bird will also.....eat when you eat....and want to bath when it hears running water. Encourage these 'flock' behaviors because these also will solidify the bond.

Now that your bonding is strong and you and your bird are confident in your relationship, it is time to play!

1. I will drop it and you pick it up - This is probably the most well loved game (by your parrot) in the world! As frustrating it is to you, it is equally exciting to your bird. Also, a positive perk, it builds trust and confidence.

2. I will wear some toys for you - I'm sure by now you all realize that your glasses, rings, necklaces and buttons are worn solely for their entertainment. And shoelaces! Oh my! The plastic tips look so much like a feather sheath that needs to be preened. If you are going to interact with your pet, carry some type of toy it can chew and handle while bonding with you.

3. Rescue Me - Anyone who has come in to The Bird Shoppe has seen Malku hanging pitifully by one toe or his beak waiting to be rescued. Parrots find this fame delightful.

Remember that you and your family are your birds flock/family and needs to feel as an important and loved member. Respect, love and nurture as you do the humans and your pet will be totally secure and happy.

Hugs,

Anne
